The connector trail from the parking area to the old trailway was a mixture of dirt and icy slush. MicroSpikes is best in this section. I got by in bare boots by walking at times off path through the woods. Once on the old trail I was able to wear snowshoes although the snow was scant up to the WMNF boundary. The snow cover improved as one progessed up the slope. There was unconsolidated snow on a solid base on the Mt Kinsman Trail. Saw hikers with snowshoes or microspikes. The Kinsman Ridge Trail was snow covered with a nice packed footway. There was a well packed path down to the first ledge below the North Kinsman summit. I broke out a rough path to the lower ledge where there is a nice view down to frozen Kinsman Pond. Great views today especially of the Franconia Ridge and to the Vermont ski slopes.
Met many hikers today including the New England over 40 club and couples from Keene NH, Gloucester Ma, and Quebec. |
