Comments: Excellent day on a hike that felt more like mid February than March. Unbroken snow from the Kanc..looked like a barebooter had been through since the storm but tracks filled in. Water crossings all busted out but with low water there were no problems. We were greeted with gusty winds heading up the gully..the going got pretty slow in 10-15 inch snow over a hard base..some backslipping at times and interesting sideslopes . Tim did an amazing job breaking trail up the steeps today..the snow was deep and unconsolidated which made for some tedious going at times. Once to the ridge the wind picked up..a couple of blowdowns across the hump past Scaur trail got us off trail for a bit but with good footing. All ledges filled in, it was snowing hard most of the day and got quite windy as we approached North. Lots of snow here!!! After a brief break we headed across to Middle..perhaps off trail a few times along the way but good footing. Hit the Sabbaday sign right on then headed up Middle in a narrow corridor of snow covered trees. Less snow here over the previous crust and we made quick time to the summit. Then the fun began!!! The snowshoe skiing was amazing though sadly there was almost too much snow for butt sliding..in the steeper spots we were making mini avalanches with huge mounds of snow. In many places above the ravine our tracks were completely filled in on our way down and we literally broke trail in both directions today. That being said we had a great descent on an at best a broken out but not consolidated soft snowshoe trail, It was excellent!!! some of the best snowshoe conditions of the year. Thanks Tim and Val for a great day out. Only folks we saw all day were hauling a snowboard and skis to head down the North Slide. They had ascended via Scaur so that is at least broken out
as well
