Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, March 23, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Ski area crowded but there's always plenty more.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: First crossing open but the water is so low it is a simple rock walk for humans. For dogs whose paws shouldn't get wet, it's trickier. The others are nicely snowbridged.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Sosman over to the ski area had a 3 stem blowdown blocking the trail, but it's an easy walkaround.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: There was salt on the ski area roads, so I carried Pepper across them and used the parking areas and snowbank walks to get him to the trailhead. He had minor icing on the paws, perhaps due to the Vaseline treatment. We met two dogs, one unknown and one the incredible bundle of energy that is Toby Steel Pawz. It was a pretty easy day for Pepper, but he did have to help me break trail on Sosman over to the ski area.

Comments
Comments: This is a great snowshoe right now. I put snowshoes on after the first stream and kept them on until I returned. I used televators from the view spur to the ridge. A few others barebooted without postholing, but snowshoes clearly provided superior traction, and were used by the frequent hikers. One guy came up in skis. There was just enough new snow on the main route to make snowshoe traction beneficial and to provide a nice soft and smooth footbed for the descent.

For a last resort peak, this turned out to be a great winter snowshoe, made special by meeting Bobby, Hiker Ed and later Larissa & Toby. Ed and Larissa (and Toby in his own way) always have such big smiles on their faces; it is a joy to meet them in their element. Ours too. If Spring won't come, we'll just keep on enjoying a wonderful winter.
