Comments
Comments: Trail starts by the parking area's kiosk. The winter route follows along the Sawyer River which is more interesting than the road walk. There was a good snowshoe track with some bare boot imprints. The "bushwhack" joined Sawyer River Road close to a reflective road edge post to the northeast of the house.
Sawyer River Road was well packed by snowmobiles.
Used the new route of the Signal Ridge Trail although the original route was used by someone earlier this season. The snow exposed to sunlight was sticky and clumped under the snowshoe to some extent. By the afternoon the snow was much better as the sun angle was lower. There was a few postholes and divots from bare booters but it presented no difficulties as the snow was pliable and was easy to avoid the deeper holes. The older snowshoe track gradually disappered at higher elevations especially from Signal Ridge to the summit. There was some minor drifting on the open ridge. Today I was able to leave my snowshoes on while climbing up the observation tower as the stairs and platform were covered in snow. The views were spectacular from the tower.
The Desolation Trail had not been used of late. There were tracks on the Carrigain Notch Trail and Carrigain Brook Road leading to Sawyer River Road.
Saw six cross country skiers on my way out on Sawyer River Road.
