Rocky Branch Trail was unpacked and we broke trail through 4-8 inches of snow. The Engine Hill Bushwhack starts 200 feet up trail from its proper start. We followed a visible depression through some thick stuff but decided to break off and find a more clearer route. The bushwhack is completed. Snow depths through the bushwhack were 10+ inches. Isolation Trail had snow depths of 10+ inches of wet heavy stuff.
After 5 hours of breaking trail we stopped just below the Davis Path Junction and assessed our situation. With another hour to the summit, it being 100pm and with visible snow moving in we decided to turn around. The snow started to fall just after leaving the Wilderness Boundary and continued all the way to the car. It was 400pm when we got to the car and we were all a tired bunch. The decision to turn around proved to be a wise one. Along with me today were Slowshoes and Summerset so the trail is well packed to about the Davis Path. Snowshoes are a definite as the snow is still very soft and not consolidated.
"Mount Isolation, you beat me this time, but I'll beat you the next time because you've grown all you are going to grow...but I'm still growing!" |
