Light powder over well packed base until Fire Wardens. Less well packed after, with from two to six inches and drifting higher. Spur trail had a lot of snow, eight to ten inches over decent base. Twinway had about a foot of light snow. With the deep snow up there, we spent a lot time ducking under snow covered branches. Short breather across Guyot then back into deep snow up to West Bond. Legs were getting a bit tired. Once down onto the ridge between Bond and Bondcliff,we switched to spikes and stayed in them til the far side of Bondcliff. The descent from Bondcliff was the worst part of the day. All side hill drifting with four to six inches of loose over a hard crust. Had to kick the shoes in to not slide down and fall, which we both managed to do several times. Once we got lower the snow was lighter. From Wilderness Trail out it was just a couple inches over a packed base. At Lincoln Brook Trail we switched into spikes and did the long trek out. It was a physically challenging day. The weather was incredible, mild temps and calm all day! We had great views all day. Lots of stops along the way to take pics and simply stare at the amazing Whites! Great hike with Bob, who stuck it out despite back issues. |
