Weather forecast wasn't all that wonderful, but we decided to give it a whirl. Yeah!! Sunshine and blue sky all the way to the summit of Mt. Monroe! We put snowshoes on at Gem Pool on the way up and wore them from summit to car on the way down. Trail goes left where it normally goes right up high, (after alpine zone sign) so you find yourself coming out a bit more north when approaching the hut. We were fine in snowshoes, but there are quite a few patches of hard ice under the thin layer of snow.....tricky footing at times, but wasn't worth taking shoes off/crampons on (for us). Car temp said 42 at 1pm.......snow was just starting to get sticky/ball up from the marshfield station to the hiker lot (as we took the path through the field). |
