Comments: Got a late start today(9:30) and intended to do Washington but conditions originally forecast didn't materialize. We were at the hut at 10:50 and while the cloud clover over the peak looked like it might lift at times on our ascent, it actually lowered while we fueled up at the hut. Very diffuse white light made it difficult to see the cairns as we ventured perhaps 400 yards up the ridge. Looking back the hut was disappearing rapidly and we decided to head back before the top of the Ammo got socked in. Another hiker who had left for Monroe as we approached the hut turned around for the same reason. The trail up had been traveled by perhaps three hikers and was still quite loose, particularly on the steeps. Above treeline has a lot of ice just under the light snow covering. Had we continued on we likely would have changed to crampons or hillsounds from our snow shoes. We never saw the other two hikers and we know two hikers had planned to leave the trailhead at 7:00 so they may have made it up and over Washington before the cloud descended and thickened. They had a 2.5 hour head start on us. Anyway, it all worked out because the run/glissade down the Ammo was incredible. 30 minutes to cover the 2.2 miles from entering the scrub to the trailhead. Absolute best descent of the year. Great day with Jim, if a short one-Maia Papaya for lunch and all is good....
