Wore snowshoes car to car. All of these trails looked to have been broken out on Sunday, after the most recent storm, with the exception of Mt. Tom, which a barebooter or two appeared to have hiked yesterday.
That said, there was heavy drifting in spots on the upper Avalon and Willey Range Trail such that the trail could not be discerned at times. Some of the harder packed drifting was welcomed: I floated on top of it without breaking through. The rest of the "broken out trails" were subject to 3-6" of new snow and/or drifting. To say, these peaks weren't freebies.
Smoothed out the minor postholes on Mt. Tom Spur and down the A-Z. Visited by two gray jays, one just before Mt. Field and the other on Mt. Tom. Willey Range Trail was especially lovely today, with little rime feathers and snow clinging to tree trunks, fairy tale like. Willey Range Trail from summit south was unbroken as was the A-Z beyond WRT. |
