We had a late start getting out on Saturday, and left the lot around 11am. The trail to Greeley pond was understandably packed down and would have been fine bare boot but I chose to put crampons on in the parking lot just to make life easier down the road. Two in our party were in snowshoes and one in micro-spikes but the crampons were defiantly the best bet today. The trail from Greeley pond to Osceola was not quite as packed down but was not postholded for the most part. The guys in snowshoes and micro-spikes definatly were slipping a bit here and there but I had no issues. I used my poles almost the entire way to both summits, and used an axe on the way down to self arrest.
The chimmney pass was easily done, however the snow cover was light and it was basically crampon on rock the whole pass. I did take a look a the chimmney itself but the ice was too brittle to stick an axe safely so I elected to take the pass instead. The trail from east peak to Osceola was not as well packed but was still fine in crampons. Luckily for us it was so well packed by the end of the day. Anyone who is going to be out early in the morning or right after snowfall should expect to need snowshoes despite me not having to use them. |
