Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking area at end of W-J in good shape, but full on our return with one car parked off the road up from it.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: snow bridged
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One step over. This trail is winter is great; too bad the snow can't remain all year to cover the eroded summer footbed mess.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fast and easy trails for Pepper and Shyla. Both had a little bit of paw icing despite pre-hike treatments (Vaseline for Pepper, Mushers Wax for Shyla), but they didn't complain. There had been a dusting of new snow, and up high some drifting, which may have led to the icing that did occur. Since a major road crossing is involved, it's possible a paw could pick up some salt unless they are carried or booted.

Comments
Comments: We bare booted up to near the summit cone since the path was so solid. We put spikes on along with added layers including balaclavas and wind gear for the summit cone, and then kept the spikes on for the rest of the hike. There is a sliver of ice/packed snow on the cone along the trail that can be used by the spikes for all but one step. Snowshoes could have been used for the hike, and if I hadn't gotten chilled on top I would have put them on for the descent just for fun. We finally met other hikers a good distance down from the peak, and they were almost all in spikes but there were snowshoers down low. There was no postholing. There was some minor drifting in the upper trail in a couple of places. As expected, we were sheltered from the winds almost the whole way, while the summit cone was exposed and provided a nice piece of excitement to spice up the hike. The views were great but hard to capture on "film". Jackson is such a great hike in winter on cold windy days. Thanks Cory and Shyla for getting us out on a cold and windy day for a fun hike.
