some blowdown still remains ascending wildcat a from the notch. |

packed track up through camp dodge and on imp trail. some drifting on north carter trail which became continuous on carter-moriah over middle and south carter. packed track underneath. some nasty drifted over postholes from south carter to zeta pass.
drifted and partially windpacked snow to carter dome with some sidehilling. down to the notch was more windpacked and drifted powder to the steeps which then had good traction with a mix of hard pack with light drifting. some butt slide chutes to deal with. a bit of exposed rock. saw people on both sides of dome without snowshoes so expect postholing. the wildcat ridge trail was in great shape with a nice snowshoe packed track thanks to folks who were up there ahead of us today. good footing on the slide crossing and on the various steep pitches.
the summit lift on wildcat was not running so no skiers until about halfway down the mountain. trails were generally hard and crusty especially up high. we were not approached by anyone about purchasing a ticket.
we wore snowshoes the whole hike. carried crampons for either side of the notch, but they were not necessary today.
a bit cold to start in the morning and the winds on the exposed ledges north of middle carter were tough, but temps and winds moderated over the course of the day and it became quite comfortable later on. views were fantastic. nice to see a couple familiar faces along the way. thanks to cynthia for a good hike. |
