Peaks Mt. Moriah, NH
Trails
Trails: Herd path, Stony Brook Trail, Carter-Moriah Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, January 15, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of space at the trailhead parking lot. We parked on the road outside the driveway to the vacant lot and there is good space for 5-6 cars. The vacant lot is not accessible by car (plowed snow drift).
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: We by-passed the Stony Brook crossing by accessing the trail via the herd-path from the vacant lot on Carter Road. However, Georg went down to check it out. It is difficult and requires either stepping on ice covered rocks or on rocks under water. Open water in almost all the tributary crossings on Stony Brook trail - but they are all easy to deal with.

Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Great day for Cinnilla and no trouble anywhere (the Stony Brook crossing is tricky for dogs and they will get wet. We avoided it by bypassing this section).

Comments
Comments: The trails are frozen and solid - beginning to soften along the ridge around Noon.

Georg and I bare-booted, used micro-spikes and snowshoes. All methods work and none are perfect all the way. Probably, our preference would be for micro-spikes all the way if we only had one choice.

The lower third and upper third of the Stony Brook trail are in good shape - but the middle section is horribly damaged by bare-booters - with 2-3" depressions up to 2.5' posthols. It is just the "perfect" place to twist your ankles right now. Can't explain why the damage is not present on the upper section. Maybe they turned around.

Nice to meet and chat with Steve (aka Little Brown Mushroom). He was heading up the trail on his second hike of the day as we were heading down.
