Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, January 1, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Ferncroft lot was plowed nicely and has a porta-potty.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The water was low at the Dicey's Mill crossing and there is a large birch log that can be used as well.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There were numerous small blowdowns and bend over throught the hike. The most problematic, other than the one that claimed the life of Matt's saw, was the tagnled mess of large blowdowns along the Rollins Tr. They have been limbed but a little tricky to navigate with snoeshoes on.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Marlie had to sit this one out due to some foot issues. :( The trail was nicely packed for dogs but the cold temps may be too much for some. We saw two other dogs today, Kali I assume in the parking lot, and a 8 mo golden retriever named Pemi who checked off #42 & #43. Both looked to be having fun and eager to hike.

Comments
Comments: Despite the chilly forcast things turned out quite nice. We were fairly sheltered from the wind and the sun was nice and warm. The ledges along Blueberry Ridge Tr seemed easier to me than in the summer and were filled in nicely with snow. There was some drifting along the Rollins Tr and we had just started to track it in nicely when the "booters" came through. The upper portion of Dicey's Mill Tr (above Rollins) is nicely tracked and packed and we were able to groom out most of the lower portion. No signs of recent traffic down McCrillis Tr, Kate Sleeper Tr, East Loop, Walden Tr or the north view spur on Passaconaway. I did travel to the NE outlook then turned around. Thanks to Matt for leading most of the way and to Patrick and Kyle for joining in the fun.
