Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Zealand Road closed. US 302 fairly full lot with snowmobilers, skiers and hikers but still some room.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All streams snowbridged or wooden bridged.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One blowdown on Zealand Trail, one more near stream crossing above hut, and two small ones nearing Zealand Spur. These are no problems. A bit more of a nuisance are small broken spruce-fir trees sticking up or into the trail, and these are minor. Some ducking under branches or lean overs up high. Just above Zeacliff lookout the main trail braids. The Zealand Spur has an interesting Y in the trail that looks like they were equally used, but only the left goes to the peak. The right goes ? since it never connects back up with the left. No problem with blazes being buried in snow this year, but rime/rime like snow have hidden the AT blazes quite well.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: A fun trail for the mighty tough little dog. On the braided trail section I didn't always choose the best option on the way in so I let him lead on the way back, and he nailed every choice. Smart aleck.

Comments
Comments: I didn't see another hiker on the way in excepting those who stayed at the hut and were leaving. On the way back above the hut I only saw the hut caretaker. I would guess 3 people were ahead of me who went on to the Bonds. No views until we were at the hut on the return leg, and could see up the valley under the clouds. Wind was never a significant factor. I used microspikes on the road; otherwise snowshoes. Great downhill boogie conditions for snowshoes on the way back until the flats.
