Peaks
Peaks Mt. Tecumseh, NH
Trails
Trails: Mt. Tecumseh Trail, Sosman Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, December 29, 2012
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Ski area crowded today but one can always find parking, even late arrivals like us.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Drifts
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The streams and some smaller drainages are open. I'd suggest boots for the first to rock hop before putting on the snowshoes. The others aren't risky but one may get their snowshoes or dog paws wet.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A couple of leaner trees that aren't a problem.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fun day for Pepper. He iced up a bit on his paws since they got wet in the brooks/drainages, but there was no serious snowballing even when we broke trail. We saw three other dogs today.

Comments
Comments: The trails were a fabulous snowshoe today, and I would expect the same for tomorrow with the new snow. We broke out the little loop section heading down which was great fun for me; pretty deep for Pepper. I would think most people will skip it going up since it is not consolidated and there are steep short sections. Sosman was a great snowshoe back and forth, and while still a bit narrow in places it should be fast and fun. The steeper stretches of Mt. Tecumseh had been flatted and compressed making for a great climb in MSRs, and then the added snowfall and churning from other hikers made those same sections a soft, fast and fun boogie down.

I would expect tomorrow's trails to be a great snowshoe too; the first up having to work harder in the new fluffy snow but being rewarded with a soft and fun snowshoe down.

It started snowing heavily much earlier than forecast by WMUR-TV this morning which made for a tricky drive home on 49 & 93 with lots of traffic. Unfortunately on getting home I saw on the news that I-93 had a 15-20 vehicle accident several exits further south.
