Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Moriah, NH
Trails
Trails: Stony Brook Trail, Carter-Moriah Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, December 24, 2012
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking area is not sanded but minimal ice and snow so it should be no problem even in car all season tires.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: First crossing rocks ice capped. Spikes or snowshoes with crampons recommended. Second crossing easy hop and third frozen, but spikes and/or snowshoes with crampons helpful.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Plenty of bendovers on upper ridge which require ducking mostly, some twisting, only a few lower. I took out maybe 10 but there's plenty more for the next hikers.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Pretty good conditions for most dogs. There is some open water but it can be used to drink and avoided to keep the paws from icing up. The crust seemed to hold the dogs off trail. The sometimes difficult ledge climb near the top was a piece of cake today. Pemi had a ball carrying sticks of all kinds, and running to and fro. He had minor paw icing; the same for Pepper. At the crossings Pemi didn't mind getting a bit wet, and Pepper easiy rock hopped.

Comments
Comments: As the last Moriah report noted there had been some postholing, and below that footprints in the crust made for a choppy surface. Spikes didn't grip too much once the crust was broken some, but it was tough snowshoeing up. But snowshoes gave the best grip up high by far, and on the way down we started to create a much better snowshoe path, although it remains narrow in places.

Pepper and I were dragging a bit until we caught up to 3 bundles of enthusiasm, Sunshine, Kristy and Pemi, and then we just had a fun hike with them thereafter. Last year on Christmas Eve we had run into Lori, Kristy and a wonderful hiking dog named Romeo, so this year it was fun to hike with them and Romeo's worthy successor, Pemi. Thanks for a great day on the trails, from me and Pepper. Merry Christmas.
