Date of Hike: Sunday, December 23, 2012
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Only our vehicle in Rt 16 parking lot at beginning and end; not clear where three others that we met on the trail parked, perhaps in the housing development, which also avoids the first half mile of trail and first crossing.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Drifts, Ice - Breakable Crust, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: First crossing about a mile up from Rt 16 parking lot tricky because of high water and iced stepping stones, so used spikes. Crossings at 2.0 and 3.0 miles also icy but easier.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: I removed two small blow downs above second crossing.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I would think the breakable rain crust would be hard on paws.

Lost and Found

Comments
Comments: Robe caught up with us just below second crossing; he had already hiked S&M Carter's in morning. Unseen by us until just below summit were two others who broke trail. The trail is a mess with bare boot post holes from before the rainstorm and freeze up; we tried wearing our snowshoes on way up, but they kept catching in the post holes, so we switched to spikes like everyone else. We wore our snowshoes on the way down in a futile attempt to smooth the trail, as the icy snow had softened some. We walked out the last mile via the logging road and paved road through the housing development. Cold blustery day felt like winter.
