Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The two crossings on the lower part of Avalon Tr. are un-bridged but rock-hopable. The second crossing requires a shallow boot bath unless you can take really long steps, but only the tread on your boot will get wet. Gaiters are a really good idea in case you slip. If it rains as predicted later this week, water levels could be much higher and more of a problem.

Comments
Comments: Snow on the lower part of the Avalon trail (up to the second water crossing) is getting thin with ice appearing in places. Microspikes worked well on the lower section. Once you cross the second brook, you could use snowshoes or micro spikes. A great snowshoe trail got layed down today up to the Mt. Tom spur. The Willey Range Tr. has more snow, and is a little less compacted. Only saw one person on snowshoes today (everyone else seemed to be in light traction) in this section (thank you Dave L.!) The winter trail would benefit from a change from microspikes to snowshoes. We did Tom yesterday. Conditions were good on the spur then (see 12/22 report.) The views, icy trees and snow were spectacular higher up. Photo link below. Have a great holiday season everyone!
