First half of Mt. Tecumseh Trail had a few minor patches of ice, but was barebootable. Quickly getting covered in a dusting of snow as of lunchtime today.
Light traction needed starting just before the second Tecumseh Brook crossing. Lots of black ice on the trail and steps (from previous snowpack partially melting, then refreezing), as well as a few short blue ice flows (fortunately stopped from getting too long by waterbars). At the summit loop junction, left (Sosman) is less icy than right (Mt. Tecumseh Trail).
I ascended to the ridge barebootedly, but put on sharp Microspikes for the descent. Dull Microspikes would have been inadequate.
The Boneyard ski trail (the one adjacent to the vista) is not yet open, so it's mostly bare with some blue ice bulges. The balance of the trails below the next downhill junction are open with manmade snow. I believe there may be some foot traffic restrictions in place this season, but I don't know the specifics (the patrollers I saw asked that you stay to the side of the trail; I was only on open ski trails for a few dozen feet, as I was using the old Mt. Tecumseh Trail for the descent).
Snowfall was definitely picking up by 1PM. |
