Date of Hike: Thursday, December 13, 2012
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: No ice or snow up to the lot but the short section at the end beyond the houses has some wicked bumps and dips - my car had no issues but cars with lower clearance might scrape on the bottom if not driven around the bumps
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Ice - Breakable Crust, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None of significance
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail is in fantastic shape, no issues
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Hannah had a great day, I don't even think she was tired at the end of the day - no issues with traction thanks to her all time four-paw traction. First few streams at the bottom still running as was the spring up high, otherwise no running water (but plenty of snow)

Comments
Comments: Dry trail at the start, dusting of snow started maybe 1/2 mile up, increased to 1-2" by Starr King, probably up to 3" in places on the ridge. Few small ice patches started just before the snow did and increased a bit in size up to the ridge, but all easily navigable around with enough rocks and frozen mud and grippy stuff so traction wasn't necessary. Put micros on just below the last steep pitch up to Starr King (definitely good for that stretch which was as bit slick), and kept them on across the ridge and back - took them off just after entering back into the hardwoods. Many would have been fine without them the whole way, but with the frozen ground and hidden snow below the ice, I was more comfortable with them and could move faster. I was even able to try out my new Hillsounds on the ridge for a few hundred yards, but this was merely just to get comfortable with them on a more mellow trail and there was barely enough ice for them to sink in without hitting dirt of rock below. Good views to the Presi's and across Crawford notch from the viewpoint beyond the summit - seems a bit more open than I remember it being. Great day for Hannah to finish her third round!! - of course she's just happy to be out hiking any mountain, but I'm still very proud of my favorite hiking buddy :)
