Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Skipped first two crossings which looked to have ice capped rocks. The third crossing was fine; I chppied ice off the rocks that run with the blowdown across the river, and then used them. Pepper used the tree going up but the rocks coming back. After a freeze it's likely the rocks will have black ice caps but with spikes and the tree for support they should remain a good route. There are some cairns a bit upstream for the typical curved crossing; today it had thick ice capped rocks.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A few easy step over stems that have been there awhile. I took out a couple small ones just to test my new saw. a Silverfox special, and it worked great. The lower part of the trail is mostly ice free, then the climb section has some ice but only in its upper sections was it worth putting on spikes, and even then they were my old repaired ones. There are a few ice bulges on the way up N. Twin high, but the main problematic ones are coming down N. Twin towards S. Twin. The soft ice in warm temps made for good grip even with the old spikes, but in freezing temps they could be tricky even in spikes.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Pepper had a fun hike on easy trails with no snowballing. He once again found a friend to play with up high, Pemi, a handsome and playful young golden, and already an accomplished hiker.

Comments
Comments: The trails were pretty fast and easy today in the mild temps. I'm still not sure how we ended up on this hike. My car seemed to turn itself onto Haystack. and once on it I thought maybe it's a good idea, there won't be any snow up high to ball up on Pepper's legs. So we abandoned the planned hike and went. What a great choice my car. The trails were fast, the temps mild, the ice easy, the skies were overcast & foggy up high (but they were probably so everywhere else), and despite that we ran into Sunshine, with Christy and Pemi which was great. Pepper and Pemi had fun playing while the people talked hikers and dogs. For such a dismal day this was a great hike.
