This was our first time on the Holt trail. We knew it would be steep but had not anticipated the extent of the steepness on PJ's ledge. There was significant ice, often requiring a less than optimal crossing of the ledge or necessitating a work around. We were turned back just shy of the summit, when we encountered blue ice along the most obvious line of approach, with no work-around that all of us could manage. A fellow coming up behind us, with long legs and arms, was able to get up and over a rock section and then he was good to go for the summit. We would have needed crampons to proceed. Discretion being the better part of valor, and given the long drop should one of us slip, we decided to retreat and try again another day. Great views from the ledges and a wonderful hike. |
