Date of Hike: Sunday, February 14, 2010
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking area at trailhead is plowed.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Two small tributary brooks are flowing and easily rock-hopped. All the crossings of the North Fork of the Hancock Branch on the Cedar Brook section of the route are still iced-over and can be crossed but the ice feels thin in a few places. Recommend crossing one person at a time.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Couple blowdowns -- one with an easy herd path, the other (on the South Hancock slide) a little tricky to negotiate if you're wearing a large pack.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Only flowing water is on the Cedar Brook section, in two small tributary streams. Carry extra.

Comments
Comments: On a windy day, the Hancocks were probably less windy than many other peaks, but there was still some wind, especially on South Hancock. Our group climbed the steep route to Mt. Hancock entirely in Microspikes, but we were at the very limit of their usefulness -- in retrospect, snowshoes would probably have been a better choice. Snowshoes were used on the traverse between the two peaks due to drifts and fresh snow. After marginally successful attempts to go down the slide off of South Hancock standing up on snowshoes, we all resorted to butt-sliding, which was far more effective -- and fast.
