Comments
Comments: Hike a big loop, starting on Tunk Mountain Trail then bushwhacking east up the small peak "Spring-Salmon Peak" located between Salmon Pond and Spring River Lake. Hit the summit, then walked along a series of open ledges. Descended gradually along the south slopes of the next hill to the east, thence down to a wide canoe carry trail (not official) that links Spring River Lake to Tilden Pond. Continued to the shore of Tilden, then backtracked a few hundred feet and picked up a narrower carry trail around the east side of the pond to the outlet brook. Bushwhacked across the outlet on step stones thence up to the col between the easternmost knob of the Tunk Mountain ridge and the next knob to the west. Bushed up to the eastern knob where there's a tremendous ledge overlooking Anderson Pond and the Downing Bog wetlands. Thence I backtracked to the col then bushwhacked west over four additional rugged ridge knobs, targeting wonderful open ledges on three of them, to pick up Tunk Mountain Trail just below the spur to the North Peak. Visited the North Peak, then descended via the trail to the trailhead. I had used aerial imagery to find the ledges prior to my hike and marked them with pins for the journey so that I would not miss the good stuff.
