 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Plenty of parking at the end of the maintained part of Nordic Knoll Road in Newry. The road continues as a logging road, but is clearly marked as off limits to vehicles and should be walked from there. |

Followed the instructions in Maine By Foot with the exception of the last bit to the summit (see below) where I found a better route. The first 1.5 miles or so follows the logging road extension of Nordic Knoll Road and is in good condition, moderate grades, and easy to follow. From the closest point along the road nearly due west of the summit, the route leaves the logging road and follows a minimally maintained but clear footpath easterly and steeply uphill, marked with occasional small cairns, and quickly emerges onto open slabs with great views of the Mahoosic Range. The Maine By Foot write up describes the trail as ending at a ledge 0.3 or so below the summit with "no views" beyond that point (likely the point where a spur path off the main road leads N to an open ledge), but I found a moderately easy to follow route (marked with cairns) continuing straight up the slabs to within 0.1 or less of the summit. Thereafter, a rougher herd path continues through a short stretch of fir forest past a large boulder and ends at a big open slab with excellent northerly and westerly views maybe 75 feet from the true summit, which is in the trees. A very faint herd path continues to the highest point. |
