Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Bull Branch Road is in decent condition. Should be passable for all vehicles. Parking is just beyond the trailhead before the gate.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Leaves - Significant/Slippery
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Water levels are not high. The crossing of Goose Eye Brook near the tent site is on ledges that were wet. Stepped in the shallow water and found the underlying ledge to be a bit slippery.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail in generally good condition. One tree across the Wright Trail at about 1" to 1.5' above ground with one limb cut-off to facilitate passage. This was a short distance above the tent site. Bog bridges on the Wright Trail between the open ledges and the Mahoosuc Trail are in poor condition. They are more a hindrance and hazard than no bog bridges. Side trail and path widening in these muddy spots. This condition is about the same or worse than when I last used the trail in 2020. The bog bridges on the Mahoosuc Trail are effective even though they are at ground level rather than propped up on log crossties.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw a couple of dogs. Dogs must be comfortable with steep pitches.
Bugs
Bugs: None

Comments
Comments: The Wright Trail is natural without any embellishments (i.e. rock stairs, good bog bridges, wood stairs, lots of signage). The trail is marked by blue blazes. At a critical turn left off the old forest road there is a blue blaze on a tree and some small sticks across the extension of the road beyond the path. One group missed these subtle indications of the turn in the trail and continued up the forest road. They eventually backtracked and regained the trail. A couple of other hikers went up the path to the tent site rather than staying on the Wright Trail where it crosses Goose Eye Brook. There is a blue blaze on a tree across the brook. The ledges have a steep pitch and would be challenging in wet or icy conditions. Today the surfaces were dry in the open areas. In the wooded areas the leaves covered some roots creating a slippage hazard.
As mentioned above, there are wet muddy spots uphill from the open ledges. Some of the rock ledges on the Mahoosuc Trail up to Goose Eye East Peak were wet and required care especially on descent.
Nice Fall leaf color. Great views from the ledges and from Goose Eye West Peak and Goose Eye East Peak. Down low on the Wright Trail there are fine viewing of the small cascades, pools, and rock gorge on Goose Eye Brook.
Lots of hikers out today. The majority were from Maine. One man from Quebec was running the Mahoosuc Trail in a day.
