Amazing day to be oot and aboot. We parked at the road junction before climbing up to the lone mtn trail, though you can drive up there. We wanted to make a loop and come down the other road to the truck. Very well flagged trail and work has been done on water bars. 1 mi of moderate/ steady climbing from the trailhead to AT. Easy jaunt over to the Abraham side trail where we took a little break. Short, steep climbs up to treeline and spectacular views. We had the breezy summit to ourselves today. One couple was summiting just as we started down. This was my first time using the trail off the southwest ridge down into barnjum. The cairns were easy to follow, though some were small. Rather loose rock and somewhat steep areas. Heading into the woods there was flagging to a well worn trail. Some open viewpoints of the middle peak and back at the ridge we came down. The road walk was ok at the end, lots of views up to the ridge. Truck to truck, I got about 8 mi with 2200 vert. I was very pleased with the condition of the southwest ridge- barnjum trail and will probably use this area when I try for middle peak whenever that happens. The colors today were incredible; yellow leaves starting to turn on the birches, bright green of the fir boughs, and very deep blue sky made for a memorable trip. Also, my son's first 4000 footer! |
