Even though we had been down this road last year (to get a portion of the Haystack Notch Trail) I was still a little nervous. I have a new Nissan Versa, which is definitely not high clearance. I drove extremely slow and cautiously. It doesn't really get dicey until the end. There are a couple washout and gulleys, but not deep enough to cause issues. I drove at an angle to avoid them. It was reminiscent of the Starr King lot. Actually, I think Starr King is a little worse. Parking was a grassy pull-off for about 4-5 properly parked vehicles.
One more thing about the drive in. Some parts of the road had very little space to pull over for any approaching vehicles. Could be tricky. Maybe this was good training for when we do the Algonquin Trail. |

I was pleasantly surprised by this, as I doubt it is often used. Trail starts as a path mowed through a logged area. Wooded section has blazes that look like they were recently painted, until shortly before the trail enters the Caribou/Speckled Wilderness. Several blowdowns, none difficult. A few looked as though they had recently been dispatched.Thank you! |

We needed this section for tracing. Except for the ride in, I would return in a heartbeat just for that logged area in the beginning that is now a gorgeous meadow. Prema saw a hummingbird in all those flowers. Nice views of surrounding hills and Caribou Mountain. Watch for the small arrow that leads you off the grassy logging road into the woods. Beautiful flat walk along the brook, but not for long. Ascends to the Wilderness boundary and shortly after, the junction.
