Peaks
Peaks East Royce Mountain, ME
Trails
Trails: Laughing Lion Trail, Royce Trail, East Royce Trail, road walk
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, July 5, 2026
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: We were the only ones dumb enough to do Laughing Lion so…
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Leaves - Significant/Slippery
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: One on Laughing Lion had some slippery moss. Otherwise most were bone dry and the others easy rock hops.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Laughing Lion could use some additional blazes in spots, especially since it doesn’t get a whole lot of traffic. There’s also some bad erosion in spots (likewise for parts of Royce). Couple of blowdowns of Laughing Lion and Royce. East Royce is in great shape though the unofficial extension out to the radio equipment is overgrown and tough to follow in spots.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: A couple of spots on Laughing Lion and upper Royce might be tough for short or small dogs (or dogs with arthritis like ours).
Bugs
Bugs: Very few.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Blue dog leash at the East Royce parking lot hanging on a sign.

Comments
Comments: NOTICE: I don’t know if this applies to any of the lower viewpoints or not, but several of the rock climbing routes are closed due to nesting peregrine falcons. Please be cautious.

We did a loop today because Laughing Lion was such a PITA that we decided to descend East Royce and do a road walk. We also took the “unofficial” (even though there’s sort of a sign) extension along the ridge out to the radio equipment. Neat view into the Wild River Wilderness (we’d never done the extension before).
