Well today was planned summit day for Katahdins but the winds and blowing snow was just too bad to be above treeline that long sadly. The day before winds were turning the blowing/falling snow whiteouts. Today they had come down a little but not enough for a summit day. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it does not. We went to Blueberry Knoll, always a favorite and broke maybe 5" of fresh snow on a packed out trail. We then went up Hamlin to see how far we could get and maybe some views at treeline. Unfortunately we only made it to 3550' and that is when the blowing snow that was straight out our faces stopped us in our tracks and we turned back. I went broke out all the lean-to's to do something other than be in the bunkhouse. I then went out to the pond outlet and found myself very close to Dudley so I just walked over to it. People had packed it out. I had to only route find where the drifts came through. Once I made it to the junction, it was about 1' of new powder drifts and we made it up to the caves. I tried to get up it but slid back down. Went back to camp after this. |
