Comments
Comments: Truly lovely day to pop up above treeline. I skinned up the uphill route, left skis by the ski patrol hut, and switched to boots and snowshoes for the out and back. Saddleback was a mix of ice, hard cardboard snow, and bare rock. I saw a couple ski tracks and they looked very un-fun. I followed a set of fresh snowshoe tracks for a bit but they unfortunately lost the trail and turned around pretty quickly. Trail coming down from saddleback was drifty and deep mixed with a couple icy ledges and a few dozen yards of sheets of thick glare ice (spikes might have been better here but I didn't feel like swapping). The trail down in the col was a little hard to follow. More heavily laden trees and blowdowns but nothing crazy. Definitely wandered into couple of up to my waist spruce traps and had to crawl under trees a few times. There was an old snowshoe pack underneath the drifts which made the going fairly easy. The way up horn was a lot of well packed cardboard snow with some shallow drifty bits.
