We were pleased to be able to get to the summer trailhead. We hiked the road to Stratton Brook outlet. Someone had driven in previously and did get through the low area which had mud and ice. You would want a high clearance truck to drive through it. The Fire Warden’s Trail was in pretty good shape. There were sections with 2 inches or more of snow and sections that were bare. Dave and I took out some smaller blowdowns so the trail is in better shape now. We did not put spikes on until we got to the steep section above the Moose Falls Campsite. There was some ice under the snow so spikes were helpful. The section of the AT to Avery Peak was tricky because there was not enough snow to cover the rocks and there were plenty of holes to avoid. The AT up to West Peak was OK other than a tree which we lifted a bit to make it easier to get under. The view was very limited from both peaks. Dave completed the 67 on these two peaks. |
