 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
The guidebook says the trail starts on Penobscot Pond Rd but then in the driivng description, says nothing about ever turning onto a Penobscot Pond Rd, only Nahmakanta Rd. Gaia calls it Nahmakanta Rd as well. I drove in Sias Hill Rd and Smithtown Rd. All roads should be suitable for low clearance. No fees/checkpoints for this one. Roadside parking but pletny of room to get off at the jct with a secondary rd just north of the trail. Only one there at 5 and 8pm. |

 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
The trail was signed and is marked with red diamonds (I don't recall the frequency) but is not hard to follow as it mostly follows roads. I believe it was signed well at all jcts. The roads may have been a bit overgrown, but I don't really recall. No pictures of blowdowns but that doesn't necessarily mean there weren't any. |

After the behemeath of a day I had before on Katahdin, I let myself sleep in and didn't get started this day until 5pm! This was a quick hike to redline North Lake Trail on the north side of Second Roach Pond. The trail follows a road for 3.9mi, then turns right and follows what I believe was also a road for most or all of its way another 0.4mi. Easy hike and the campsite looked very nice. Some views to surrounding peaks from the pond. I got the sense that it's not used much. Rather than return on the trail, I stayed striaght at the jct where the trail turns right/south to head down to the water, and just continued on the road to the north for 1mi till it met Nahmakanta Rd. Here I turned left/west and walked 2.9mi west back to my car. Not really any shorter distance, but quicker than the grassy roads in the woods. The trails/roads were dry as far as I recall and Gaia had me at 8.8mi, 400ft of gain, 3hr7min. |
