 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
I think the guidebook's directions were accurate. Apple maps didn't recognize the Gaia location of the trailhead as a road, so took me to the nearest location which was of course another location and not accurate. Fortunately, it wasn't a terribly time consuming mistake. Long drive in, but I don't remember any issues. Mid-clearance did fine, and maybe low-clearance would be okay too. I don't remember well. Usually the biggest issue on the North Main Woods roads is massive potholes. Day use fee of $18/day for non-residents, $13/day for residents, and free for anyone under 18 or 70 and older. It's per person but per car. Room for several cars at the gate. |

 | Water Crossing Notes: |
I think there was only one water crossing which was on the Carry Trail. Water was higher than it had been due to rain and thunder the day before, but it was still rock hopable. |

 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
I don't think there was a sign at the start of the trail, but Carry Trail was signed at its jct and on the water. Alligash Mtn Trail is called Fire Tower Trail but is signed at the jct with Carry Trail and at the cabin. I don't have any photos of blowdowns but that doesn't mean there weren't any. I think the Fire Tower Trail was lightly trodden and maybe a little brushy, but not terribly hard to follow. I don'trecall if there was blazing. |

First hike of the day. It had rained the night before, so everything was very wet, and what few bog bridges there were were very treacherous. This is an easy hike in along a road (with a needed spur to the Carry Trail Campsite, though I think it's much less than 0.4mi as the guidebook indicates; that may be round trip), followed by a more mixed (starts easy, gets real steep) trail to the firetower. I was in cloud and did not climb the tower, which supposedly has some of the best views in Maine. I don't usually climb those sorts of towers (minimalistic ladder) anyway. Cool to run into a massive group of college-aged kids carrying in a ton of canoes to go for a ride in an impending thunderstorm...??! I admired their tenacity in lugging those things...Gaia had me at 4.7mi, 850ft of gain, 1hr55min. |
