 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Twitchell Brook Road has a "no motorized vehicles" sign at ~1400'. It's easiest with a truck, but I think a mid-clearance vehicle could carefully make it. |

I only have a few more long-mileage bushwhacks left on my NE3k list. This was one of them. Given the conditions were supposed to improve throughout the day, I figured a hike with several view ledges might be worthwhile. It was.
I parked at the "no motorized vehicles" sign at ~1400' on Twitchell Brook Road and followed the road up to where I was east of the ledges on Robinson Peak. I encountered open woods right up to the (very steep) slope along the ledges. I found a couple of nice viewpoints. At this point, sun was giving way to fog, but the wind ensured the ground and trees were drying out. I gained the ridge after seeing enough of the ledges and encountered mostly open woods with one thick section until I reached the flat and semi-confusing saddle between Robinson and Bear, with the other ridges also converging. The ridge to Bear had varied woods, but mostly semi-open. The summit of Bear was excellent - I'll be sure to return here eventually.
The ridge from the saddle to White's Notch was much thicker than what I had encountered up to this point. Along this ridge, I rolled my ankle bad, which cut short my initial plan of hitting East Bear. Instead, I found a very nice (cleared) view overlooking the little pond below White's Notch, rested for a while, and started towards Campbell Mountain. This also was fairly thick going, with nice open areas scattered in. I visited some of the excellent ledge perches near the top of Campbell Mountain, and then angled back to my truck. |
