Comments
Comments: East Baldpate has incredible views in all directions. Many 4K peaks do not have such a great 360-degree view. I could see Mt Washington to the south and Mt Abraham and other ME 4K peaks to the north as well as many other mountains.
The hike up the ledges on East Baldpate is enjoyable when they are not wet or icy. The surfaces were dry today. The cairns mark the direction of the trail on the open ledges. I would recommend following the contours of the tilted rock slabs for the easiest footing rather than walking directly at the cairns. The rock surfaces allow for some liberty on the route as there is no vegetation to trample on the steep ledges.
The leaves were not slippery. I spotted one small patch of ice that was easy to avoid.
If you decide to only summit West Peak, then I'd advise walking the short distance towards East Peak to arrive at the open ledge with views of East Peak.
Lots of hikers out today including a woman from Canton MA finishing her NE 100 highest on East Peak, an AMC group, two families with young kids, and many others.
