Trails in excellent shape and easy to follow, except for minor braiding near the top of the Mt. Battie Trail. No blowdowns. |

 | Dog-Related Notes: |
The scrambling on the Mt. Battie Trail would be a challenge, particularly on the way back down. |

 | Bugs: |
Between an early start (6:20 AM) and a fast pace, that was enough to keep them away. No repellent for this one. |

Great morning hike from downtown Camden, getting to the summits of Mt. Battie (excellent views) and Mt. Megunticook (excellent views from the Ocean Lookout, none whatsoever from the true summit), and returning by the same route. The scrambling up the Mt. Battie Trail is a relatively short section, but fairly challenging. The rock slabs here also have less friction compared to similar trails in New Hampshire, so I definitely wouldn't want to do this in wet conditions. There is also minor scrambling involved on the last push to the Ocean Lookout via the Tablelands Trail. Tablelands Trail is varied and interesting; climb back to Mt. Battie from Megunticook was comparatively easy. Hike statistics (from Camden): 6.4 miles, 1,800' gain, $0 entrance fee. Full details on Unnecessary Climb! |
