I had wanted to climb Mahoosuc Mountain for a long time now, but wasn't going to do it unless it was a clear day. Although there was some wildfire smoke, this day fit the bill. The climb to the AT up the Notch trail is very mild.
I went through Mahoosuc Notch and climbed up the AT until I got to the stream crossing draining the valley between Mahoosuc Mtn and Mahoosuc Arm. I followed this up to Mahoosuc Notch 2. I was able to walk in the streambed along rock slabs for about half the way, then had to navigate through varying woods until I got into the notch. I had heard a couple of third-hand reports that the floor of this notch was strewn with massive boulders, just like its namesake, so I wanted to check it out. This was not the case. There were definitely some rocks along the approach, but the floor of the notch, although very narrow, was much like many other saddles and cols between peaks in NH and ME. There was a massive slide on the Mahoosuc Mtn side that nearly reached the floor of the notch. So although very wild, I didn't find anything overly special in here. From the north end of the notch, I followed up the slope through mostly open woods to multiple incredible viewpoints on and around the summit of Mahoosuc Mtn. Even getting in and out of the scrub around treeline was relatively easy. I had braced for thick, nasty woods around the top, and was pleasantly surprised to find this not to be the case.
I followed the side of Mahoosuc Mtn back down through varying woods until I reached the AT. I then went up to where the AT turns gradually right near the top of Fulling Mill Mtn and followed the ridge up through open woods to the summit. I then angled slightly more south to reach the AT again, went to the open stretch of Fulling Mill's south summit, turned around and retraced my steps back to the truck at the Notch Trail trailhead.
All told this was ~10.5 miles, ~3100' gain in ~5.5 hours. Mahoosuc Mtn made my short list of 3000 footers I will bushwhack again someday. |
