 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Nothing too notable. Several small blowdowns are scattered all along the trail. Blazes could be repainted. Water bars need attention. Just before reaching the summit, the trail corridor is vague out in the open due to lack of cairns/markings. |

While in the park this week, I had the opportunity to hike North Brother, one of the Maine 4,000-footers. A spectacular peak!
We had a good weather window for our days in the park so this worked out wonderfully. Marston is a pretty straightforward (and very easy in places) route until that final 0.8 mi. from the upper Mt. Coe Trail junction to the summit, which kicked my butt. Steep and rough. Despite not being mentioned much, there are some viewpoints along the trail where it runs along the lip of the small glacial cirque that encloses beautiful Teardrop Pond. Good looks back to Doubletop and South Brother from here. Views from the open summit are of course 360 with an amazing look into Katahdin's secluded Northwest Basin.
Only in Baxter can you hike a mountain like this and encounter less than ten people all day. Glorious! |
