Visited Mahhosic Land Trust's conservation project, Tumbledown Dick Mountain. Fire Road 120 is in excellent shape and took me out to three waterfalls (<100' off trail to the west, audible from the fire road). To get to the mountain, a logging road branches off the fire road (shown in MHT's map) and ascends the west ridge to the mountain to a log landing. Contrary to the MHT map, there's no view from the landing. A wide climber's trail leaves the far side of the landing (brushy and overgrown at its start, then clear) and ascends partway up the ridge. Ledge openings are visible just off this trail to the right (south) at a cairn. There's a fantastic slab cliff there, used by rock climbers. The wide trail ascends a little further then becomes an abandoned and intermittently visible trail marked with occasional cairns. It ascends true to the ridgeline over occasional mossy slabs to the wooded summit where there's a Porter jar. Nice to see all the land conservation work going into the Mahoosics these days. |
