I'm a very experienced hiker who is still sort of afraid of heights and couldn't seem to find a detailed description on this one. Abol is the shortest but steepest way up Katahdin- you gain 500 ft in the last 0.16 before tablelands, and about 2000 ft in that last mile before tablelands. Obviously this happens over steep rock scrambles, slab, and loose slides so just be prepared for that. Where my fear came in, my strength mostly made up for it- but i would not recommend this trail if you don't have either going for you!
Overall super fun scramble climb, gorgeous trail & one of my favorite hikes.
More honesty in report below. Very honest. |
