A FINE day in the Pine Tree State. 99/100W for me. Golden ticket - snowshoes end to end. Trailbed blown in down low but once away from 26 a trough was visible and easy to follow. Moose have utilized portions of the trail. From about 3200+ to East, any evidence of a trough disappeared. Snow depth skyrockets about 33-3400 to feet. No one has been to East in a while - as evident by a base up to West and none past this. Average depth was waist high on a 6'2 human, with deeper drifts from 3300 to East Peak. INSANE amount of quicksand like powder. A rope (50') would be very useful for the pucker pitch just after West Baldpate. The snow depth at the bottom of it is easily 4-5 feet and its exhausting trying to claw your way back up. You know how a dog runs through fresh powder, and they look kind of like a land dolphin? That's exactly how I looked today. Despite being 15 on the summit the spicy winds cut any of that warmth down. Hebron Academy was ascending on our descent with about 8 - all in snowshoes - just insanity that people actually wear proper footwear. Judging by their gear/attire they were heading to Baldpate West only (they where above table rock). We had loosely talked about also grabbing Old Speck since it was right there, but upon return the only bit of trail visible was a post holed chopped up mess and we both looked at it, and just kept walking without even saying a word. |
