We were planning on doing Uncle Tom Mountain and the Greenwood Ice Caves in the same hike, but there is now a road that is in great shape all the way to the top of the clearcut, just short of the quarries on Uncle Tom Mountain.
The best view of the day was actually at the landing where the road ended. After parking at the ATV trail, it was a short and easy walk to both quarries and the viewpoint to the east.
We then drove back down to the trailhead for the Ice Caves. I have explored many of Maine's boulder cave systems, but the Greenwood Ice Caves are my new favorite! There are so many passages to explore, some going quite deep, and the rock formations are very impressive, even if you don't want to go into the caves. On top of it all (literally), there is a great viewpoint on a cliff above the caves. The trail to the caves was unmarked, but clear and easy to follow. We spent quite a bit of time exploring the cave system and enjoying the view, before heading back. |
