Can't ask for much better. Signage and blazes very helpful, especially for inexperienced hikers who may be troubled by leaves obscuring the footpath.
A great big thanks to the Bethel Information Center. They have a lot of print outs for area hikes and the ladies there have good advice. The print out for this one had an addendum added to it, reminding you to check the kiosk for changes made. And they were good changes! More trails, and something for every one.
Started with Lapham Ledge. You quickly ascend to a small ridge of several ledges, many benches to sit and enjoy the view of the Androscoggin River and various mtns. You may take a short connector to the Buck's Ledge Trail, but we took the JnJ Back country. Although this was a cold weekend we were treated to a snake crossing our path. This trail eventually has a steep section which brings you to the spur for Moody Mountain. Looks like it was an old service or fire warden road. Nice variety of trees in this area, many colors. Right before the summit, there are ledges looking out at the Presidentials. but do not stop here. Go a little further and you will come to a log book at the actual summit (Thanks JnJ). Descent on Buck's Ledge Trail leads through a nice contrast of evergreens and yellow leaves. When you leave the ledge be careful to go in the right direction or you will have a roadwalk back to your car.
From the parking area, there is a gravel road which will take folks unable to hike up to a spacious parking lot with great views.
This is a good choice for a sunny windy day. The sun warms you up, the trees behind you are a windbreak, and there is still a lot to see. And just south of the lot, the town of Woodstock has a spring. |
