Was an NPD until nearing Caribou Spring. Once turned and started toward North Peaks, it was just us. A spectacular day from Russell Pond campground to Hamlin. The primary reason for writing this trail report is to discuss the primary water crossings. The strength of the flow of water changes very frequently and during heavy rain or just after, both crossings will be dangerous. There are no real work arounds for these crossings, either. The first major crossing of Wassataquoik has spots where water was flowing between rocks and was string enough that if I had been solo, I would have been at a significant risk of being swept off my feet (thanks, Knee Deep for the assist) and it was a good weather day and had been the two days prior. The second major crossing, at North Peaks is the one I was cautioned about by the ranger. But as water tends to do, the conditions changed in a positive manner. This one reminded me more of a Wild River crossing - good flow (maybe 350-400 cf/s) and water near up to the waist, but would have been quite manageable solo. The takeaway from this? Tf you aren't confident reading the current and the flow around rocks, and how to spot safe as possible passage, the north side of the park may not be for you, especially solo. As far as the trails themselves, I will leave the beauty and secrets for the finding. |
