Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: The metal rungs on the summit cone of Goose Eye would be very difficult. Would require carrying a dog up to sets of rungs
Bugs
Bugs: a variety of bugs. In the morning, bugs were not a problem going up Carlo Col. Along the AT/Mahoosic Trail, there were clouds of small bugs right at face level. Near the bogs, the black flies came out in force. They were bad on the summit of Goose Eye, so I decided to apply some OFF. About 30 seconds later a swarm of large bees came out of the spruces. I guess the OFF aggravated the bees. We high tailed it off the peak. The last mile back to the car, the deer flies were bothersome.

Comments
Comments: Our goal was to tag Goose Eye for the NEHH and redline a few trails. Carlo Col had pretty good footing and got a little bushy in the upper sections. Stopped in at the Carlo Col Shelter. It was nice and clean. The stream below the campsite was running, but water level was low. Once at the junction with the AT/Mahoosic Trail we went south for 1.8 to redline to the Mt Success Trail. Climb up through the boulder at the Col was fun. The terrain wasn't too bad, with a few ups/downs and some flats in between. Beautiful area. We turned around at Mt Success Trail and headed back. The climb up to Mt Carlo was consistent, but didn't take too long before popping out on the summit ledge. There is a smallish view over the tops of the spruces. Once you leave the summit, its down, down, down over slabs and rocks. Some of the slabs were wet, and made for slick footing. In the col, there was some mud, and a couple of sunken bogs bridges, that will get the bottom of your shoes muddy. The climb up to Goose Eye is exciting with some ledge scrambles and metal rungs. The summit has views for miles. Wish we could have stayed awhile. Darn bees! The drop off of the summit cone was steep for a good stretch. I found this trail to be somewhat rough with many rocks to content with and running water in the trail. There were some slippery spots that almost took us off our feet. The last mile out had some tall grass and hubby later found a tick on this leg. Total miles with the out/back on the AT was 11 miles. Total time 7 hours. Great day overall.
