I needed Hamlin to complete my Winter 67 but today was not the day. Tote Road was primarily hard pack snow or ice. A few spots of exposed gravel. Abol Trail started off as hard packed (Hillsounds) and then we hit 4"-8" of fresh powder (snowshoes). Switched to Crampons for the slide and the wind was much stronger than forecast. Back to snowshoes for the Table. After about 20 minutes on the Table, my hiking partner told me my nose was all white. My face was uncovered up to that point as I kept thinking the winds would die down (dumb). Knowing we had 2-3 more hrs above treeline (prob -25 windchill) to bag Hamlin we made the call to turn around. Side note: We hiked Baxter on 3/1 and had to abandon Hamlin that day because of weather. The Abol Slide on the 3/1 hike was ice and exposed sand/gravel and made for challenging conditions. The snow on Abol Trail on 3/19 made that segment much more manageable. |
