First solo ascent of Baxter Peak in winter. Upper elevation temps in single digits with winds gusting to 40 mph, sunny. Snow all hard pack styrofoam. Wore crampons whole way with whippet pole. Went via Hamlin vs Saddle Trail due to wind conditions and potential down climb on Saddle Trail. Very low snow year for entire region especially Baxter. Only 7 people at Chimney pond bunkhouse. I was the only person to summit that day. Spectacular.
Severe postholing at beginning of North Basin Trail. Days following my hike, light snow fall has blown into postholes. Very tricky & dangerous section. Otherwise very easy trail conditions. |
