We had a great day despite some lingering weather and being socked in on both peaks. It started clearing on our way back through the saddle and back over Hamlin. Fantastic views from the tablelands and Hamlin Ridge on the descent. Trails are broken out and generally well-packed. Lots of drifting between Hamlin Peak and the saddle. A group had skied up and down Saddle Trail over the weekend, including Baxter Peak and (presumably) Hamlin as well. We used snowshoes below treeline, then crampons from just above treeline until back at Chimney Pond Trail then bareboots down to Roaring Brook. Were able to walk on the crust most of the way up and down Baxter from the Saddle and on the summit cone of Hamlin. We were breaking through a lot and postholing in and around the saddle. The roads are well packed by snowmobiles. Ice axe and crampons recommended for Baxter summit cone and for the bottom of Hamlin Ridge just above treeline. |
